22 more ‘drug peddlers’ jailed

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested 22 more people in Rajshahi on Tuesday and they were sentenced to six months jail each by a mobile court on charge of taking drugs and drug peddling.

The elite force conducted raids in different areas of Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Natore and Joypurhat districts and arrested 26 people for their alleged involvement in drug trading or taking drugs.

Regular case has been lodged against four of them.

The RAB sources said the force also seized 760 yaba tablets, 47 bottles of phensidyl, 1.57 kilograms of ganja, and 39,800 liters of local liquor and some other drugs-taking instruments from their possessions.

Later, the arrested persons were produced before a mobile court. After examining the evidences, the court sentenced 22 of them to jail.

Nure Alam, assistant superintendent of police working with the RAB, said different courts sent more than 343 drug addicts to jail during the last 14 days.

Ex-municipality mayor held

Detective Branch of police arrested former mayor of Katakhali municipality and political secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh of the city unit from Rajshahi courtyard on Tuesday.

The arrestee, Majidur Rahman, was reportedly supposed to be preparing for contesting impending national election from Rajshahi-3 constituency.

Police arrested Majidur at noon while he was leaving the court terrace after appearing before it in a case, said a spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Politon Police (RMP) Senior Assistant Commissioner Iftekhar Alam. The accused was sent to jail after being produced before court, added Iftekhar. Majidur was accused in several other cases.

2 killed in N’ganj road accident

Two people were killed as a truck collided head on with a pickup van in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj yesterday morning.

The victims were identified as Mizan Halder, 45, an inhabitant in Dumki upazila of Patuakhali district and the driver of the pickup van Abid Hassan, 23, a resident in Naria upazila of Shariatpur district. Mizan Halder was the owner of the pickup van.

Officer-in-Charge of Katchpur Highway Thana Qium Ali Sarder said the accident took place in Aduria area around 6 am on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway. Mizan Halder and Abid Hassan died on the spot.

The bodies were sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsies.

Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed’s death anniversary today

The 15th death anniversary of Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed will be observed today.

On the occasion, Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Smriti Parishad has oraginised different programmes including placing of wreaths at his grave at Banani and offering off ateha.

A milad and doa mahfil will be held at an orphanage in the capital on the day, said a press release of the parishad.

Barrister Ahmed, a prominent lawyer, made immense contributions in the legal arena of Bangladesh and acted as an Attorney General as well as an Adviser to the Caretaker Government in 1996 and 2001.

He also made great contributions towards the democratic movement of the country, the release reads.

Nat’l Fisheries Week from July 18

The National Fisheries Week will begin across the country on July 18 with a view to creating awareness among people to produce more fish through proper use of water-bodies and protect indigenous fish species from extinction.

On the second day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will officially inaugurate the week by releasing fish fries at a lake of Ganabhaban on July 19, a handout said.

The Department of Fisheries (DoF) under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has taken various programmes marking the week.

A rally will be brought out from Moithshyo Bhaban at 8 am on July 18. A five-day fair will begin at Mymensingh Fisheries Research Centre on July 20.
