6 mayoral, 104 councillor candidates in the race

Khelafat Majlish nominated mayor candidate AKM Mahbub Alam withdrew his nomination paper yesterday, the last day of withdrawing nominations. He said he withdrew his nomination in favour of BNP candidate Adv Mujibur Rahman Sarwar. As a result a total of six mayoral candidates are in the race for the mayor post. They are:  Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah from Awami League, Adv Mujibur Rahman Sarwar Of BNP, Iqbal Hosen Tapos of JP, Dr. Manisha Chakraborty of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, A K Azad, district CPB president and Mawlana Obaidur Rahman Mahbub, city president of Islami Andolon, EC sources said.  

Mujibur Rahman, returning officer of BCC election, said that a total 9 councillor candidates and one reserved seat counselor withdrew their nomination papers yesterday. As a result 104 candidates will fight against 30 councillor posts and 35 candidates are contesting for 10 reserved post.

Distribution date of symbols fixed for today. Chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on May 29 announced the date on which three city corporation elections in Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet will be held—July 30.

Nurul Huda said they are holding the three city polls after receiving clearance from the local government ministry, adding that there was no problem as regards delimitation and the voter list as well as legal matters. He also announced the commission will hold elections to five municipalities and five upazila parishad polls on July 25.
