National professors pledge to improve education arena

National professors yesterday said they would fulfil the responsibility given to them for the betterment of the country, especially in the field of education. They said the country had given them much more honour than they had contributed for the country. The sentiment was expressed at a grand reception given to three newly appointed national professors – Prof Emeritus Dr Rafiqul Islam, Prof Emeritus Dr Anisuzzman and Prof Dr Jamilur Reza Choudhury – organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) at its office.

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid was the chief guest, while secretary of secondary and higher education division Sohorab Hossain was present as a special guest. The UGC chairman presided over the meeting and UGC secretary Md Khaled delivered the welcome speech. The national professors were accorded citations and crests as mark of honour.

Thanking the UGC for arranging such a reception for the first time, Jamilur Reza Choudhury said, “Earlier there were 22 national professors. But the UGC did not give such reception earlier. This is the first time it has happened.”

Expressing his feelings, he said, “I started my teaching profession 55 years ago in 1963. Just a day after getting the result, I met one of my teachers at Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET). He said you have done well. Then he told another teacher to give me a piece of chalk and duster for taking a third-year class. Thus, my teaching profession started without any gap between studentship and profession.” He also said, “Eminent architect FR Khan knew about me. He told me to settle down in Chicago to work there. But I did not go. The satisfaction what I have got here would not have been obtained in other countries.” “I don’t know whether I am worthy of it. It is a great honour. I want to protect the honour what I have got,” he added.

Thanking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the honour shown to national professors, Dr Anisuzzman said, “After passing matriculation, I decided to study Bangla. I did not know where I would reach. But I have been honoured as a national professor.”  “What I have given to the country, I have got more from it,” he added.

“It is a rare honour. Today, I recall the teachers who taught me from school to the university. These teachers enlightened me in various fields of Bangla literature and language. On the other hand, the prime minister was one of my students as well. I pray for the welfare of all,” Dr Rafiqul Islam said.

Nurul Islam Nahid said, “These eminent professors are the best persons of the country. They are the epitome of the nation. We have been honoured today by honouring them.”

“We would seek your counsel so that we can work for the development of education. The new generation will be inspired by their contribution,” he added.  Sohrab Hossain said, “It’s my privilege that I am giving honour to my teachers today. Rafiqul Islam was my direct teacher who taught me honesty and humanity. These eminent professors have contributed immensely for the country.”  Abdul Mannan said these eminent educationists have given correct directions to the nation at various moments of crises and people will follow in their footprints. “These renowned educationists are honoured both home and abroad for their outstanding contribution,” he added.
