Drug peddling goes unabated in Meherpur

Ringleaders go into hiding in Meherpur after anti-drugs drive
Our Correspondent, Meherpur
Drug peddling goes unabated in Meherpur

Though the administration has undertaken a strong and robust anti-drugs drive, smuggling of different kinds of drugs is continuing at the Kazipur and Kathuli frontiers under Gangni upazila of Meherpur district.

Although some listed drug smugglers have been arrested in the special drive, smuggling is still continuing, said locals. In order to avoid arrest, some top drug traders have gone into hiding, but the trade is being run by middle-class traders. Some of them are new entrants to the business.

After the special drive against drugs, Meherpur police succeeded in seizing 1,382gm of hemp, 14gm of heroin, 368 bottles of Phensidyl and 146 Yaba tablets between 17 May and 26 June. One drug merchant died in a gunbattle with the police a few days ago.

Locals said drug smugglers were being protected by influential persons. Some local people, who preferred not to be named, identified the drug smugglers as: Sentu Mia of Garabaria, Salam and Monirul Islam Moni of Ramkrishanapur Dhola, Ahmed Ali, Miskat Hossain, Mizanur Rahman Poltu, Rafiqul Islam of Khashmohol, Moti of Rongmohal, Nazmul and Laltu Mia of Sohratola, Alam Hossain, Mandu of Harabhanga, Abdul Halim, Ripon Hossain, Atiar Hossain of Kazipur Zoha Mia of Mothurapur, Faruk Hossain and Foysol Hossain of Tentulbaria, Magreb Ali of Koromdi, Zoha Military and Shariful of Kollyanpur villages under Gangni upazila of Meherpur district. Among them, Magreb Ali and Abdur Rashid were nabbed in the current drive, and are currently in custody.

Some top drug traders are also allegedly involved in the illegal trade in firearms. Youths of the area trade drugs under their auspices, it was alleged. Drug traders have become multimillionaires through the drug trade. Ringleaders got the drug couriers released as and when they were nabbed. According to the locals, sometimes the authorities fail to take stringent steps against them because of their special political affiliations.

Teluk of Garabaria frontier village, Nur Haque, Shafi, Khoshbar, Bashirul, Gomer, Rahidul of Ramkrishnapur, Tariqul, Afsarul, Rafiqul of Khashmohol village of Gangni upazila were identified as couriers who smuggled drugs of top traders to their destinations. Monoara Khatun, the wife of Nur Haque, disclosed that her husband and his brother would bring contraband from the border in the past. Now they have left this line of work as they have become old. “But they were neither involved in couriering drugs in the past nor in the present,” she claimed.

Locals claimed that drug smugglers Monirul and Salam of village Ramkrishanapur Dhola, in particular, have become very affluent. Buluara, a wife of top drug trader Salam, claimed that her husband has gone into hiding with his second wife over the ongoing special drive against drugs. She also claimed that she left him over his involvement in the illegal drugs business and was residing separately with her son. Sources said one Shafi has taken up the responsibility of smuggling Monirul Islam’s goods.

Locals said the drug takers frequent the area from Kathuli to Khashmohol frontier. When the special drive against drugs was launched, they allegedly skedaddled. After the branded drug traders went into hiding, some new drug traders and couriers emerged. Among them are Chan Mia of frontier village Ramkrishnapur Dhola, who carried the drugs of top trader Babu of Kathuli village. After Babu died in jail, Chan Mia is himself running the business now. Dablu, Bablu and Alamin have recently joined the illegal drug trade.

Harendranath Sarkar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gangni police station, said, “We have arrested some drug traders and takers and produced them in court. We are trying to find the delinquents who have gone into hiding.”

Meherpur superintendent of police (SP) Anisur Rahman told The Independent: “Drug traders would not be spared, whoever they may be.” He claimed that the police has made a list of the drug traders and takers and Meherpur police are                 relentlessly working to eradicate drugs from the district.

He also issued a directive saying no student or youth would be spared if found in the town’s streets after 8pm.
