Canadian special envoy to Myanmar due tomorrow

Canadian Prime Minister's special envoy to Myanmar Bob Rae arrives in Dhaka tomorrow morning to further discuss the Rohingya issue with Bangladesh leadership, reports UNB. The envoy visited Bangladesh in May last and met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Toronto during her visit to Canada in June last.

During his Bangladesh visit, Bob Rae said those who are liable for breach of international law, including crime against humanity, should be brought to justice. "Rohingya crisis will cause collapse inside the capacity

of Bangladesh which has at present been emerged as an alarming issue around the world. This refugee crisis is the biggest refugee crisis after the Second World War till now," he said while addressing a public lecture here on May 3.

In October last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named Bob Rae as his special envoy to Myanmar who began his work immediately, engaging in diplomatic efforts to address the crisis regarding the country's Rakhine State.

As a special envoy, Rae is reinforcing the urgent need to resolve the humanitarian and security crisis in Myanmar and addressing the situation affecting vulnerable populations, including the Rohingya Muslim community, other religious and ethnic minorities, and women and girls.

He also advises the Canadian Prime Minister on how Canada can best support efforts to respond to the needs of those affected and displaced by the recent violence.
