BSS

State-owned re-rolling mills, Dhaka Steel Works Limited, yesterday restarted its operation after remaining shut for 24 years, reports BSS.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu reopened the mills at a function at the factory complex in Gazipur with Industries Secretary Muhammad Abdullah in the chair.

Speaking as the chief guest, Amu said the Dhaka Steel Works Limited will turn into a large industry soon as the government has made a plan to launch two more units of the factory.

He underscored the need for producing environment friendly products to make the industry a profitable one.

The industries minister urged the officials, employees and workers of the factory to work with transparency and integrity for making profits.

Dhaka Steel Works Limited was nationalised in 1972 at the order of then President. Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) took the responsibility to manage the factory situated in Gazipur.

Later, in 1994, BNP government declared the factory as pay-off and shut it down.

In 2016, the resumption process of the factory started following the declaration of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Concerned government agencies were later requested to provide gas, electricity and water connections to the factory for its revival.

BSEC hopes to manage the factory profitably and develop it as a role model for the steel sector of the country.
