Implementing SDGs

‘Need to reduce number of two crore ultra poor’

Staff Reporter

There are still about two crore ultra-poor people in the country, and considering it as a big challenge the number has to be reduced to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs), speakers said at a conference yesterday.

However, the government has claimed that it would be able to create an example by implementing the SDGs, like the Millennium Development Goal (MDGs).

Speakers said this while addressing a national conference on "SDG implementation review" at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in

the city.

Among others, commerce minister, Tofail Ahmed, founder and chairman of BRAC, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, chief coordinator on SDGs affairs in the Prime Minister’s Office, Abul Kalam Azad, former senior secretary of the public administration ministry, Dr Mozammel Haque Khan, and senior secretary of the general economic division of the Planning Commission, Dr Shamsul Alam, spoke on the occasion.

“Bangladesh is moving forward successfully, targeting to achieve the SDG under a planned action plan, as per directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” Tofail Ahmed said.

The United Nations (UN) has awarded Bangladesh for achieving the MDGs in proper time, the commerce minister said, adding that it would be able to achieve the SDG too in proper time.

The UN has fixed 17 goals, 169 targets and 241 indicators to achieve the SDGs for Bangladesh and the country started its work in 2015 to achieve the target, the minister said.
