Two suspects of AL leader murder killed in ‘gunfight’

Staff Reporter

Two suspects in the Awami League (AL) leader Farhad Hossain murder case were killed in a reported gunfight with members of the detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the capital’s Uttar Badda area early yesterday. The deceased were identified as Nurul Islam alias Sunny, 30, and Amit, 35. The shootout occurred at the Satarkul Projapoti Garden area, said Abdul Mannan, sub-inspector of Badda Police Station.

Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Detective Branch (North), told The Independent that the deceased, Nur Islam and Amit, were involved in the murder of Farhad Hossain, general secretary of AL’s Badda unit.

Tipped off, a team of DB police conducted a drive around 3 am in an under construction building in

Satarkul area of Projapoti Garden. Sensing the presence of the police, the murder suspects opened fire and police fired back.

Later, police found the two badly injured men and recovered two firearms and bullets from the spot. They were sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), the doctor on duty declared them dead. Police suspected that the deceased had physically taken part in the Farhad Hossain killing mission.

On June 5, two killers from a CNG-run auto-rickshaw had shot Farhad dead from a close range just after he came out of Baitus Salam-Jam-e- Mosque of North Badda after offering juma prayer.

The auto-rickshaw was stopped by police at a check-post on the Badda-Gulshan link road. But the murderers also fired at the law enforcers and fled the scene.

After the killing of Farhad Hossain, two people were seen fleeing with arms on CCTV footage. Police speculated that one of the killers, Nurul Islam, who wore a red T-shirt when the murder took place, had escaped with a gun from the Gulshan cheek post. The suspect, Amit, was an associate of Ashik and Mehedi. Ashik fled to America and Mehedi is in India.

Sources said Farhad Hossain was killed because of extortion, control of business, or personal conflicts.

According to locals, Farhad had a long-standing dispute with a rival group in the area over dish business. They said the murder might have been triggered by differences over the sharing of extortion money collected from local auto-rickshaws and other vehicles. Family and business feuds are also being seen as probable reasons.
