Staff Reporter, Barishal

Nomination paper of Jatiya Party mayor candidate Iqbal Hosen Tapos was declared valid for the upcoming election in Barishal City Corporation. On the first day of scrutiny on July 1, nomination paper of Jatiya Party supported candidate Tapos was cancelled over allegedly being a loan defaulter.

Following the allegation Tapos appealed to the Barishal divisional commissioner on July 3 challenging the cancellation of his nomination for the upcoming Barishal City Corporation election and the authorities concerned gave verdict yesterday in favour of Tapos. As a result, now seven candidates are in the race of mayor post of BCC election. They are Serniabat Sadik Abdullah of Awami Legue, Advocate Mujibor Rahman Sarwar of BNP, Iqbal Hosen Tapos of Jatiya Party, Dr Manisha Chakraborty of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, A K Azad of CPB, Mawlana Obaidur Rahman Mahbub of Islami Andolan and AKM Mahbub Alam of Khelafat Andolon.

Mujibur Rahman, returning officer of BCC election, said July 9 has been set as the final date for withdrwal of candidature and election symbols will be distributed among the candidates on July 10.

Mentionable, BCC has 10 reserved for females and 30 general councillor posts at 30 wards in 58 square kilometre areas. At present number of voters reached 2,42,166 including 121432 male and 120730 female voters, he said.

In Rajshahi, two candidates, including one for the mayoral post, have got back their candidature in the forthcoming election of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) following their appeal with higher authority, reports BSS.

Advocate Murad Murshed for mayor post and Zillar Rahman for general councilor post got back their candidature.

Earlier, their nomination papers were rejected by the returning officer during scrutinizing on July 1 and 2 last.

The two candidates filed appeal petitions with commissioner of Rajshahi division against the decision of returning officer.
