Newly elected mayor of Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khaleque  took oath of office yesterday, reports UNB. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath at a ceremony held at Shapla Hall of her office. Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain and State Minister for Rural Development and Cooperatives Division Md Mashiur Rahman Ranga were present.

Local Government Division Senior Secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan conducted the oath-taking ceremony. Later, the newly elected 31 councillors of general wards and 10 female councillors of the reserved seats of Khulna City Corporation were also sworn in at the same venue.

Khandker Mosharraf administered the oath to the councillors. Awami League mayoral candidate Talukder Abdul Khalek was elected in the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) election held on May 15 last.

Khalek won the election with a big margin defeating his nearest rival BNP contestant Nazurl Islam Manju. Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister asked the newly elected mayor and councillors to work sincerely for the wellbeing of the people irrespective of political identity and views. “When you work as public representatives, you must take care of the wellbeing of people,” she said adding there are also representatives from BNP and other parties alongside AL’s representatives here.
