Maradona slams Messi’s performance against France

Daily Express

Diego Maradona has given his opinion on how he thought Argentina's Lionel Messi played against France in their 2018 FIFA World Cup round of 16 tie on Saturday.

The FC Barcelona man was unable to find the back of the net against Les Bleus this past weekend, and despite being deployed as a false nine, he was sometimes too far away from the box to impact the game.

Maradona echoed those sentiments after the game, seemingly criticising the 31-year-old for being too far away from the opposition's danger area in Argentina's 4-3 loss.

“I saw him very isolated, far away from the box," he said, according to the Daily Express.

“I said that if he played as a No. 9, he had to go looking for the ball, piece the game together, set the goals up and score them.”

Maradona also slammed Jorge Sampaoli's team selection for the match.

“It was already predicted in the build-up. We knew, after we left Moscow, that (Cristian) Pavon, Messi and (Angel) Di Maria were the ones who were going to attack the French defence, yet I don't think they know a lot about the box, penalty spot or putting pressure on the centre-backs,” he continued.

“Yes, they know how to create, but they're not strikers.”

Argentina veterans Javier Mascherano and Lucas Biglia both retired from international football following their national team's round of 16 exit from the showpiece.
