RU female student faces severe ragging, hospitalised

RU CORRESPONDENT

A female student of Rajshhai University (RU) faced terrible ragging by some seniors on Sunday night around 11pm at the Begum Khaleda Zia Hall on the campus. Following the ragging, fellow students rushed her to the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) for treatment, as she had become unconscious. The victim was identified as Tania Sultana Bristy, a third-year student of the folklore dept and an inmate of Room No. 124 (Gono Room) of the Begum Khaleda Zia hall.

She is undergoing treatment in Ward 36 of the RMCH. Sources said some seniors of the hall ragged a few students by forcing them to memorize the names new rules on the dormitory in a called meeting. Bristy refused to memorize the rules as she felt unwell but the seniors collectively kept forcing her by hurling abuses to memorize the rules in fifty times.

She ultimately lost consciousness and was rushed to hospital by fellow students at the night.

The victim said, "They kept me hungry at night and tortured me inhumanly. I requested them not to torture me but they continued.

Later, I lost my sense. I don’t know what happened after that. When I recovered consciousness, I discovered that I’m in hospital for treatment.” Sumaya Suma, one of her fellow student, said “She did not agree to disclose names of the seniors to journalist as they might torture her again but she will inform the matter to the university authorities.”

Begum Khaleda Zia hall provost Professor Dr Mahbuba Sarkar said, “Punitive action will be taken after investigate the matter.”

Earlier, the RU authorities had banned all forms of ragging on the campus, terming it a social crime that harms the campus environment by creating mental stress among the students.

They had also said that punitive steps would be taken if anyone was found involved in ragging on the campus.

RU proctor Dr Lutfor Rahman said there were accusations of mental torture in the name of ragging.

That was why the RU authorities had banned ragging. They would take action after getting a written complaint from victim, he added.

Earlier, Fahad Bin Ismail, a first year student of the Crop Science and Technology (CST) Department left the RU as he was badly ragged on January 25 by some senior students.
