HC questions legality of 9th Wage Board

The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the ninth wage board, which has been formed to determine the salaries and facilities of journalists and staff of newspapers and news agencies, should not be declared illegal. The HC bench comprising Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) challenging the legality of the formation of the 9th wage board.

The HC bench asked the authorities concerned to send the copy of its order to the respondents by a special messenger. Advocate M Yusuf Ali represented the petitioners while Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Huq Tutul represented the state during the hearing on the petition.

Later, Yusuf Ali told reporters that the labour ministry is responsible for the formation of the wage board as per the rules of business issued by the president. But the 9th wage board has been formed by the information ministry in violation to the rules of business, he added.

The government, on January 29, constituted the 9th Wage Board to propose enhanced salary and other benefits for newsmen and employees in newspapers and news agencies.

In the petition, The NOAB sought a stay order on the operation of the wage board, but the HC bench did not pass any stay order on the operation of the Wage Board.
