Rash driving takes yet another life

Rash driving takes yet another life

In yet another fatal road accident, a former student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was killed yesterday after he was hit by a speeding bus near Kalshi Flyover. The event forcefully drove home the point that such mishaps are occurring regularly in the capital and rash drivers are getting away with impunity in the absence of exemplary punishment. All efforts by the government to rein in errant drivers have proved futile. Such rash driving, coupled with long tailbacks, have made the capital a dangerous place. Shahriar Sourov Sejan, 28, was driving his motorcycle (Dhaka metro ga-550590) and descending from Kalshi Flyover near Radisson Blue Hotel when a speeding Bosumoti Paribahan (Dhaka Metro bo 14-2610) hit him. Another bus then ran over him, leaving him seriously injured. He died later of his injuries.

Eyewitness said the speeding bus driver lost control over the bus and hit the motorcycle, which tumbled down the street, around 11am.

The passengers of the bus claimed that the bus lacked proper brakes, adding that earlier, too, the bus had met with an accident. After hitting Sejan, the driver of the bus fled. Locals rushed Sejan to the nearby Kurmitola general hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Family members said a regular case was filed by Sejan’s widow with the Cantonment police station. His body was handed over to his family without autopsy. The body will be taken to his hometown Thakurgaon district by air at 5pm.

Umme Salma, sub-inspector of Cantonment police station, said the driver and the helper of the bus were absconding. Police are trying to detain them.

Anando Mostofa, one of his family friends, told The Independent that Sejan was a fellow of ‘Teach for Bangladesh’ and a former student of the Geography department of Jahangirnagar University (JU).

A year ago, he married Munia Islam Mozumder, another former student of JU. The childless couple’s residence is in the capital’s Mirpur area.

The eldest child of his parents, Sejan has a sister. Just a month ago, a bus knocked down the motorcycle of Md Nazim Uddin, an employee of Dhaka Tribune, and ran over him on the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover.

And a couple of months ago, the tragic deaths of Rajib Hossain, a second-year student of Titumir College, Rozina Akter, a homemaker, and Runy Akhter, a MBA student, again prompted experts to examine Dhaka’s road safety.
