Veteran Singapore doctors now perform surgeries in Dhaka

Staff Reporter

Veteran doctors from Singapore are at present conducting complicated surgeries in Bangladesh instead of Singapore at a third of the cost of the operations in their home country.

Senior consultants and professors of top hospitals in Singapore like Mount Elizabeth, Gleneagles and National University Hospitals are now attending patients in Dhaka regularly.

A five-member team, led by veteran neurosurgeon Prof. Dr Timothy Lee, is currently visiting Bangladesh for the first time under a ‘Singapore-Bangladesh Joint Venture Health Initiative’ programme.

The authorities of Impulse Hospital, a private hospital in the capital, announced this at a press conference yesterday (Saturday).

The other members of the team—cardiac surgeon Dr James Wong, senior consultant (anaesthetic) Dr Md Towfique Islam and international cardiologists Dr Tan Kok Soon and Dr Tay Leslie—were present during the press conference.

The managing director (MD) of Impulse Hospital, Prof. Dr Ali Zaheer Al-Amin, and chief operating officer (COO), Dr Dabir Uddin Ahmed, also spoke at the press conference.

“Bangladeshi patients can now undergo any treatment at a third of the total cost at Singapore. For example, if a Bangladeshi patient has to spend an approximate Tk. 40 lakh on any complicated surgery in Singapore, it would cost just around Tk. 10 lakh in Bangladesh. Veteran consultants and surgeons from Singapore will conduct the operations in Bangladesh now at Impulse Hospital,” Prof. Dr Ali Zaheer Al-Amin told reporters.

Singapore’s doctors have extended a helping hand towards Bangladesh’s patients, he said, adding, “They came forward, foregoing their commercial perspective. They extended their hand of cooperation fully from a humanitarian point of view.”

Renowned doctors from Singapore will carry out operations like heart bypass surgeries and brain surgeries at one-third of the total cost in Singapore, he added.

According to Dr Zaheer, Singapore’s doctors have extended their cooperation after taking into consideration the multifarious problems of Bangladeshi patients like difficulties in getting visas, the cost of air tickets and hotel accommodations, the language problem and doctors’ fees.

“This would provide a wonderful opportunity for Bangladeshi doctors to develop their skills and see complicated operations being done here by overseas doctors. Bangladesh has the necessary equipment to carry out complicated surgeries,” Prof Dr Timothy Lee said.

Dr James Wong said he has some 30 years’ experience in private practice, and added that the initiative taken by Impulse Hospital would help the Bangladeshi people.

Dr Md Towfique Islam pointed out that Bangladeshi patients would not need to go abroad anymore for treatment as veteran overseas doctors will visit Bangladesh and conduct operations here in Bangladesh.

It would help save the country’s foreign currency and patients too, will, save their own money, he observed.
