Boro procurement drive on

Gaibandha: Boro rice procurement drive of Food Department has been continuing in the district since May amid much enthusiasm to the millers and the officials, reports BSS from Gaibandha. Office sources said the government has fixed a target to procure a total of 21,616 tonnes of boiled rice and 3,200 tonnes of Atap rice from the millers through 11 purchasing centers of all the seven upazilas in the district during the current Boro season.

Price of per kg of boiled rice and Atap rice has also been fixed at Taka 38 and Taka 37 respectively, the sources said.

To make the Boro rice procurement drive a grand success, the department of food has also performed their agreement with 487 millers of the district.

Of the total, 14,088 tonnes of boiled rice and 1,900 tonnes of Atap rice had already been purchased from the millers, said an official of the Food Department.

M Amzad Hossain, district controller of food, said the rice procurement target must be achieved easily as it would continue in the district till August, 2018.

Deer rescued in Shrimangal

Sylhet: A barking deer (Maya Horeen) was rescued from a pond in Bhurbhuria Tea Estate in Shrimangal of Moulvibagar yesterday, reports UNB from Sylhet.

Four youths, Pradip Pasi, Mintu Mridha, Nandalal Hazra and Santas Rikiasan, rescued the deer around 10 am while it got stuck in the mud of the pond.

Later in the day, the deer was handed over to local Forest Department authorities. Sources at the forest department said the dear would be released to the Lawachhara National Park later. The dear might have come to locality in search of food, they added.

39 JCD men held in Kushtia

 Kushtia: Police arrested 39 leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) while they were ‘planning sabotage’ at the house of a BNP central leader in the town on Friday night, reports UNB from Kushtia.

JCD Kushtia district unit president Mahfuzur Rahman Mithun, general secretary SR Shipon, joint secretary Rakibul Islam Rabbi and organising secretary Rokonuzzaman Russel were among the arrestees. Being tipped off about a clandestine meeting of JCD leaders, a special team of police from Kushtia Model Police Station and detectives conducted a drive at the house of Barrister Ragib Rouf Choudhury, a member of BNP’s executive committee, around 8 pm and arrested them along with explosives, said Kushtia Model Police Station office in charge (OC) Obidur Rahman.
