Prachyanat bringing ‘Bon Manush’ on Shilpakala stage June 25

Theatre troupe Prachyanat is going to stage its much-acclaimed production ‘Bon Manush’ (The Hairy Ape) on June 25 at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.  Directed by Baqar Bakul, the play is based on American playwright Eugene O’ Neill’s ‘The Hairy Ape’. The play displays O’ Neill’s social concerns for the oppressed industrial working class. The Nobel Laureate playwright’s drama features how unjustly the working class is treated through the tragedy of a brutish person named Yank.

Although one of his lesser known one-act plays, ‘The Hairy Ape’, written in 1922, followed the success of his first two Pulitzer Prize-winning plays. This drama follows the disturbing dehumanization of Yank, a ship’s fireman and a representation of the lower class. He feels the superiority from his brute strength until he meets Mildred, the well-intentioned daughter of an extremely wealthy steel magnate. She initiates Yank’s uncertainty and disillusionment concerning his place in society and humanity, leading to his bitter anger and ultimate demise. While the character of Long introduces hints of socialist ideas in the play and Paddy wistfully recalls the days before machinery, these commentaries serve to enhance the powerful conviction of the terrible human toll of industrialization.

However, the director has done some improvisations to make the drama more illustrative, contextualised and eye-catchy. One can identify that as soon as it is shown on stage.

Rifat Ahmed Nobel is in the sound direction, while the play is choreographed by Parvin Sultana Koli. ABS Jem designs the set and light.
