Mohakhali hit-and-run

Cops probe allegations against AL MP’s son

Family denies charges

Police are investigating the death of a driver who was run over by a luxury SUV in Dhaka on June 19, allegedly driven by Shabab Chowdhury, the son of Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, an Awami League (AL) lawmaker. The person who was driving the car will be identified with the help of CCTV footage and the police are trying to identify the person who was driving the car at the time of the incident, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media and public) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), yesterday.

On June 19, Selim Bapary, a 45-year-old professional driver, was run over and killed by an Audi SUV near Mohakhali flyover in the capital.

Rahman said a case has been filed in connection with the incident. “We are trying to identify the owner of the car. We will confirm the identity of the owner and his address by contacting the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). At the same time, we must identify the person who was driving the car when the incident occurred.”

“We will analyse footage from the nearby closed-circuit cameras when possible. We will also question the witnesses. After we confirm the identity of the person who was mainly driving the car, we will conduct operations to detain him,” said the deputy commissioner.

Noting that the incident did not occur very long ago, Rahman said legal action would be taken after proper evidence is collected. The police has not been able to seize the car yet, he added. The matter is being investigated, said the deputy commissioner.

Witnesses told reporters that the luxury vehicle was being driven by the lawmaker's son, Shabab Chowdhury, who did not stop after hitting the man. Ekramul Karim Chowdhury is the current Member of Parliament (MP) from Noakhali-4.

The MP’s family denied the allegation, claiming that though their car was involved in the accident, Shabab was not driving it.

Shabab’s mother Kamrun Nahar Shiuli, the chairperson of Kabirhat upazila council in Noakhali, admitted that the car involved in the accident belonged to her. She, however, refuted the claim that Shabab was driving it.

Ekramur Rahman, assistant personal secretary (APS) of Kamrun Nahar Shiuli, said they will resolve any lawsuit through negotiations. He also claimed that Shabab, who was allegedly driving the car, was in Noakhali at the time of accident. The car is now in Noakhali.

The APS also claimed that their personal driver was driving the car at the time of the incident and has been absconding after the accident.
