Flood situation to improve in northeastern region

Special correspondent

After heavy rain wreaked havoc in vast areas of Maulvibazar, Sylhet, Sunamganj and Habiganj last week, major rivers in the north-eastern region will start falling in the next 24 hours, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said yesterday. The dipping water level has improved the flood situation in Maulvibazar and Sylhet districts. However, the Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma have kept rising. The water level of the Brahmaputra, which becomes the Jamuna in Jamalpur after entering Bangladesh, is not alarming.

The Brahmaputra will remain same in the next 24 hours, but the water level of the Ganges-Padma will continue to rise, according to the FFWC. However, the Brahmaputra may swell if the northeastern parts of India get heavy rain, an FFWC official said yesterday.

The water flowing down the Brahmaputra from upstream may push the Jamuna water level up along with that of the Ganges-Padma in the next 24 hours, the FFWC forecast mentioned.
