Doctors play truant in Jhenidah

Our Correspondent, Jhenidah

A section of physicians are permanently leaving their respective workplaces without taking any permission from the authorities concerned. The health department has failed to take steps against the wrongdoers. It is alleged that four female physicians of different healthcare centres in Jhenidah have remained traceless for years. The authorities have failed to detect them.

It is possible that the physicians have left the country and serving abroad without permission of the government.

The situation has become grave as the positions held by them cannot be fulfilled for a long time.

The physicians are Shahanara Sultana, Manira Parvin, Sadia Afrin and Sanjida Yasmin Shampa.

According to the civil surgeon’s office in Jhenidah, Shahanara Sultana joined the office of the upazila health and family planning in Jhenidah Sadar on November 17, 2008. She went on leave on May 2, 2009, and has not come back to the working station since then.

Manira Parvin joined the upazila health complex on June 3, 2012. She left the office on a three-day leave on September 3 and has not come back.

Sadia Afrin joined the Harinakundu upazila health complex on January 16, 2014. She went on leave instantly for a month and is yet to come back.

Sanjida Yasmin Shampa joined the Balarampur health sub-centre in Kaliganj on August 26, 2014. She went on leave for a month and has been hiding since then.

Civil Surgeon Dr Rasheda Sultana said the physicians might have left the country by now. “It’s in complete violation of the public service rules,” she said.

The matter has already been informed to the higher authorities for terminating the contract of the physicians. The authorities have been asked to deploy physicians for the interests of locals, she added.
