Cancer treatment centre in port city

It is heartening to note that the government has embarked upon a plan to set up a 100-bed full-fledged medical centre for the cancer patients of  Chattogram city. With special initiative of the government, the proposed 100-bed cancer centre will be established within the premises of Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at a cost of nearly Tk 150 crore. As part of the prime minister’s initiative, eight full-fledged 100-bed cancer treatment centres are being established in each government medical hospital situated in the eight divisional headquarters.

The number of cancer patients is increasing fast in Bangladesh. At present death rate with deadly disease is 7 per cent and by 2030 the percentage will go up to 13 per cent. But there are only 26 cancer treatment centres across the country where only 50,000 patients can avail advantages of the treatment. Out of the 26 centres, 10 centres belong to private management where treatment is highly expensive. The poor and mid-income people cannot afford to have treatment there.

Consumption of adulterated food, excessive drinking of alcoholic substance, smoking and environmental pollution are the main causes of cancer. Consumption of the adulterated food sometimes causes stomach cancer. Early marriage, frequent childbirths, depriving children of breastfeeding and unhygienic practices during menstruation cause breast and cervical cancers among women, while smoking, chewing tobacco leaves and living in unhygienic environment cause lung, oral and laryngeal cancers among men.

Facility for treatment of this disease is quite inadequate in the country. Since treatment of this disease is very expensive, very few people can afford it. Early detection can help treatment of the disease but due to lack of awareness many people suffer from the disease silently. Affluent people can go abroad for proper treatment of the disease but the poor ones have to embrace untimely death. The National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital does not have adequate beds and equipment for treatment of the disease.

A significant proportion of cancers can be cured by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, especially if they are detected early. Early detection, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment including pain relief and palliative care, help increase cancer survival rates and reduce suffering. Cost of chemotherapy should be brought within the financial capacity of the average patients. Government should take measures for increasing the number of oncologists (cancer specialists) and expert technicians for operating the equipments for the benefit of the patients. Besides, creation of public awareness can help prevent and treatment of the disease.
