Total 102 aspirants collect nomination forms

Election fever has gripped Barishal city, with nomination papers being collected by various candidates. Till the time of filing of this report, four candidates—belonging to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jatiya Party (JP), Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB) and Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB)—for the single mayoral post, 80 for 30 general ward councillors’ posts and 18 for 10 ward councillors’ posts reserved for women have collected nomination forms from the Election Commission (EC), said Helal Uddin, the district election officer and assistant returning officer for the BCC election. However, no-one has submitted any form till now. The BCC has 40 seats, including 10 reserved for females and 30 for general councillors in 30 wards, over a 58-sq.-km area.

The present number of voters totals 2,42,166, including 1,21,432 males and 1,20,730 females, sources in the EC office said.

Golam Abbas Chowdhury Dulal, the president of the city unit of the Awami League (AL), said the name of the mayoral candidate has not been finalised yet. They have suggested the name of Serniabad Sadek Abdullah, the joint secretary of the city AL unit and the son of AL district unit president lawmaker Abul Hasnat Abdullah.

Nevertheless, the party unit will fully support any candidate the central body ultimately nominates, Chowdhury promised.

Four candidates had collected their party nomination papers for the mayoral post till the time of filing this report. Bilkis Jahan Shirin, the central organising secretary of the BNP, collected the nomination form from the EC.

The central joint secretary-general and the city BNP unit president, Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, said they will take a decision about participation in the BCC election after observing the upcoming election to the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) as the EC has already lost its credibility as regards holding a free and fair election on a level playing field.

Nevertheless, if the central body of the party decides to participate in the election, they will unitedly support the nominated candidate, Sarwar promised.

Iqbal Hossain Tapos, a central body member of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) and a businessman, was recommended from the district and city units of the party as the BCC mayoral candidate, announced Mohsin Ul Islam Habul, the president of the district JP unit.

However, Barishal Sadar upazila JP convenor Bashi Hoshen Jhunu has declared himself a mayoral candidate of the JP, saying he will resign from the party if he fails to get its support.

On the other hand, AK Azad, the president of the district unit of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), and Mawlana Obaidur Rahman Mahbub, the president of the city unit of Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB), have also collected their nomination forms for the post of the BCC mayor, but they have not submitted the forms yet, EC sources said.

According to the schedule announced, nomination papers could be collected and submitted from June 13 to 28, scrutiny would be held on July 1 and 2, appeals against the decision of the EC would be heard on July 3 to 5 on and the verdicts on the appeals would be delivered between July 6 and 8, said Mujibur Rahman, the returning officer for the BCC election. The date for the withdrawal of nomination papers is July 9 and for the distribution of symbols is July 10. Candidates are prohibited from campaigning officially before election symbols are distributed.
