Four children die in Gazipur boat capsize

GAZIPUR: Four children, including two siblings, died as a boat capsized in a beel (water body) of Bymile in the city on Saturday afternoon while they were having a boat ride on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, reports UNB. The deceased were identified as Mim, her brother Sohag, their neighbours Sadia and Parvin, all residents of the area.

Abbas Uddin Khokon, councillor from ward-12 of Gazipur City Corporation, said nine children, aged 8-12, went on a boat journey in the water body in the afternoon as part of the eid celebrations. However, the boat sank around 4pm after it developed a crack in the bottom, he said.

The four children met the watery burial while the rest managed to swim ashore, the counillor said. Meanwhile, a teenage girl went missing after a boat sank in a water body in Mirapara in the city on Sunday, reports UNB. The victim was identified as Fatema Akhter Mili, 17, daughter of Babul Mia of Mirapara Evergreen Residential area.

Fatema along with three of her friends went to a joyous boat trip at a water body around 5 pm, said sources at the local Fire Service and Civil Defence office. At one stage, the boat sank in the water body, but all of them accept Fatema managed to swim ashore.

A team of divers from local firefighting unit rushed there and conducted the search operation.
