Aziz Ahmed made new army chief

Lieutenant General Aziz Ahmed, who is the Quarter Master General of the Bangladesh Army, has been appointed the 16th Chief of Army Staff for three years. Alos, he has been promoted to the rank of General with effect from June 25 this year, according to a notification issued by the defence ministry yesterday.

Aziz Ahmed has been appointed the Army Chief as per the Defence Services Chiefs (Appointment, Retirement, Salary and Allowance) Act 2018, the notification says. Aziz Ahmed, who is also a former director general of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), will replace General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq, who is the current chief of Army Staff.

Meanwhile, the defence ministry has granted one year’s leave preparatory to retirement (LPR) to the present Army Chief from June 25 this year.

Talking to The Independent, Aziz Ahmed said that he would take over his new assignment on June 25 afternoon.

Aziz Ahmed also served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC) and the GOC of the 33 Infantry Division in the Cumilla Cantonment of the Bangladesh Army. He was also an observer for the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) and a military adviser to the force commander of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS).

Aziz Ahmed was born on January 1, 1961, in Narayanganj. He comes from Chandpur district. He completed his SSC from Mohammadpur Government High School in 1975 and went to Notre Dem College. He got a diploma in textile technology from the College of Textile Technology in 1980 and got his graduation in BA (pass) from Chittagong University in 1983.

He is also a graduate of the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur. He completed his master’s in defence studies and MSc (technical) from National University. He also completed master’s in business administration (executive) from American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB).

Aziz Ahmed was commissioned in the Corps of Artillery on June 10, 1983, with the 8th BMA Long Course. He had been a GSO-3 (Operation) in CHT, Brigade Major in an infantry brigade, GSO-II in the AHQ Military Training Directorate and GSO-I of the AHQ Pay Pension and Allowance Directorate.
