Bamboo bridge only means for villagers

For 35 years, people of 15 villages have been using a bamboo bridge on the Dakatia river, in the Gazinagar area of Raipur upazila in Laxmipur district.

Locals said it is the only means of communication. Roads and culverts have not been built in No. 5 Charpata union in the upazila.

An estimated 40,000 people cross the risky bridge daily. Students, vendors, farmers, aged men and women and patients suffer for want of a permanent bridge.

Zoera Begum of the Shayestanagar Islamia Mission Dakhil Madrasa told The Independent that they have to use the dilapidated bridge even during the rainy season. Bakul Akther, a student of the Gazinagar Charpata Darussannat Dakhil Madrasa, had the same thing to say.

Zinnat Begum, a housewife, said many political leaders promised at various times to build a permanent bridge, but nothing has been done. The 70–foot long makeshift bridge may collapse anytime, she added.

Jamal Hossain, a student, told The Independent that even patients have to be carried across the bridge as there is no alternative. If a bridge is built, it will be helpful for the sick and students.

Local union chairman Khorshed Alam said letters have been sent to the LGED, upazila engineer, UNO and political leaders, but no initiative has been taken to build a bridge on the Dakatia river.

When contact, the UNO of Raipur, Shilpi Rani Roy, told The Independent that they have sought funds to build a permanent bridge. "If we get the money, construction work will start."
