Man dies as branch of tree falls on him

A man was killed as a falling branch from a tree fell upon him while he was resting under it at Ramna Park in the capital on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Md Faruk, 45, hailing from Hasanpur in Sadhullapur upazila of Rangpur district.

Bacchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp, said Faruk and his grandson Hazrat Ali, 16, were taking rest under a jum tree while some boys were plucking the juicy fruit from the tree.

All of a sudden, the branch broke and fell on them around 3pm, severely hitting the grandfather on head and the grandson with minor injury. The injured was rushed to DMCH where duty declared him dead.

Lightning strikes kill two

RANGPUR: Two people including a woman were killed by two separate lightning strikes in Badargonj upazila of the district on Thursday, reports UNB.  

The deceased were identified as Aysha Khatun, 50, of Shahpur Masterpara village in Badargonj municipality area and Alamgir Hossain, 24, son of Samsul Haque of village Rahmatpur in Ramnatpur union of the same upazila.  Officer-in-Charge of Badargonj police station Anisur Rahman said Aysha died after being struck by the thunderbolt around 12am while she was bringing back her cattle from pasture.  In another incident, Alamgir was killed by lightning while he was taking a bath in the pond near his house in the afternoon.  

Henna festival held

A henna festival arranged by the National Press Club and Dhakabashi, a local club which works to uphold tradition and cultural heritage, was held at the National Press Club yesterday ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Addressing the programme as the chief guest Food Minister Advocate Qumrul Islam said "The government is sincere to protect national tradition from cultural aggression."

Philippines Ambassador in Dhaka Vicente Vivencio T Banddillo also attended the programme as a special guest.

A cultural programme was also held with the participation of the club members.
