OUR CORRESPONDENT, Manikganj
Security tightened ahead of Eid

Law enforcement agencies in Manikganj say they have taken adequate measures to ensure security and trouble-free journey of homebound passengers by pressing highway patrol police into service. Steps have also been taken to maintain law and order in the town area, especially in markets to ensure the safety of shopkeepers and buyers. Ahead of Eid-ul Fitr, the biggest festival for Muslims, more than 800 personnel of different law enforcement agencies, equipped with arms and metal detectors, will guard congregation venues and entrances and departure points of water and road transport terminals. Besides, plainclothes policemen   in Manikganj will be posted in crowed places.

The Paturia–Daulotdia river channel, the gateway to the capital and 21 districts in the south and southwestern region, is used by millions of passengers and passenger buses and freight vehicles during every Eid and other religious festivals. On national holidays, people look forward to a safe and hassle-free journey to their ancestral homes and back to the capital.

Rifat Rahman Shamim, police superintendent of Manikganj, said that to ensure a hassle-free journey of the homebound people of the 21 districts of the south and southwestern regions, a watch tower has already been set up at the Paturia Ferry Terminal. “Closed-circuit television cameras have been set up there to monitor ticket counters, waiting rooms and platforms,” he added.

District police chief Mahafuzur Rahman said: “Rapid Action Battalion-4, River police, BPN, APB, SB, police and Detective Branch (DB) personnel, both in uniform and in plain clothes, are active at different strategic points of the town for smooth Eid celebration. Special attention has been paid to bus terminals, stations and launch terminals to prevent any untoward situation that may develop.”

A total of 404 law enforcement forces have been deployed only at the Paturia ferry, launch terminals and bus stands to facilitate smooth journey of the homebound and returning people of the south and southwestern regions, the SP told this correspondent. “Several mobile teams are patrolling the town as well as vulnerable areas of the district. They are also conducting special raids to nab listed criminals and troublemakers,” he said.

Crimes such as mugging, hijacking, theft, pick pocketing and extortion increase in the town and the Paturia ferry terminal before and during the Eid vacation. To prevent such crimes this Eid, the law enforcement agencies have been put on high alert and are patrolling the town regularly to provide security to passengers, shoppers and the town-dwellers.

They will also check and guard the main Eid prayer grounds and mosques, entrances and departure points of water and road transport terminals, said  additional police superintendent Mohammed Mohiuddin Ahamed.
