Telcos asked to submit subscribers’ info to EC

The telecommunication ministry yesterday asked the mobile phone operators to start submitting subscribers’ information to NID wing of Election Commission (EC) after checking it in their own database from Sunday.
The re-registration and verification of subscriber’s identity module (SIM) cards of will begin on Sunday and will continue for 3-month.
State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim said this to the journalists after a meeting with the chief executive officers of the mobile phone operators at the secretariat in the capital.
The operators will prepare a list of the registered subscribers after crosschecking with the national identity number, the minister said.
After preparing the list, the mobile phone operators will submit the list to the NID wing of Election Commission. The commission will crosscheck the NID numbers of subscribers provided by mobile phone operators with National Identifications Number database.
The mobile phone operators will send SMS to the subscribers to reregister SIM cards if their NIDs do not match with the users’ name.
Also, people who have more than one number or using SIM cards registered in others’ names will have to re-register with their own name and identity.
