Road crashes kill 14 in dists

At least 14 people were killed in separate road accidents in Bogura, Gopalganj, Rangpur, Thakurgaon, Naogaon and Pirojpor districts yesterday, reports agencies.

In Bogura, at least five people were killed and seven others were injured as a truck hit a human hauler on Bogura-Natore road at Partekur in Sadar upazila yesterday, reports UNB.

Three of the deceased were identified as Sumon, 28, son of Hafizar Rahman of Kukrul village in Sadar upazila, Anwar Hossain, 25, son of Abdul Hye of Koigari Khadai village in Shahjahanpur upazila and Moklesur Rahman, 52 of Nandigram village. The identity of the other could not be known immediately.

The accident took place around 9am when a truck rammed an oncoming human hauler leaving 12 people injured, said Sub-inspector Abdul Aziz Mandal of Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZRMCH) police camp. The injured passengers of the human hauler were taken to SZRMCH where five died after admission, he added.

However, police seized the truck but the driver managed to escape the scene.  

Meanwhile in Gopalganj district, three members of a family were killed and two others were injured when a truck collided with a human hauler on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Majhigati in Kashiani upazila yesterday, adds UNB.

The deceased were identified as Selina Begum, 48, headmistress of Jaynagar Govt Primary School, her daughter Eka Moni, 20, assistant teacher at Char Muguria Govt Primary School and Eka Moni’s daughter Maisha, 3.

Two others- Eka Moni’s son Bishal and human hauler driver Kamrul- were also injured in the crash.

Selina’s nephew Nadim Hossain said the human hauler fell into a roadside ditch being hit by the truck in Majhigati around 2pm, leaving two passengers dead on the spot.

Three of the injured were taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital where Eka Moni succumbed to her injuries and the other two are undergoing treatment, said officer-in-charge of Kashiani Police Station Azizur Rahman.

In different places of Rangpur and Thakurgaon, three people were killed and five others were injured in separate road accidents, adds UNB.

Two persons were killed and five others injured when a Rangpur bound passenger bus from Bogra hit a roadside tree and fell down into the nearby ditch at Madarhat point on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway under Pirganj upazila yesterday afternoon.

The deceased included a minor boy, 12, and an unidentified woman, 30, said In-charge of Barodorga Highway Police Camp Sub-inspector (SI) Moazzem Hossain.  Three of the injured passengers have been admitted to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex while two seriously injured passengers were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Hossain added.   

In another road accident on the Thakurgaon-Dinajpur highway, a motorcyclist was killed after a truck hit his motorcycle at ‘Balaka Uddyan’ point under Sadar upazila of Thakurgaon district yesterday noon.  Personnel from Thakurgaon Fire Service and Civil Defense Station rushed to the spot and recovered the body.

“The deceased was identified as Raju Mian, 35, of Biral upazila in Dinajpur district,” said Station Officer Mofidar Rahman of Thakurgaon Fire Service and Civil Defense Station.  Two separate cases were filed in these connections with the respective police stations.

In Naogaon, two motorcyclists were killed in a road accident at Komaigari Eidgah field near bypass bridge area of the town yesterday noon, reports BSS.

The deceased were identified as Shoaib Ahmed, 32, resident of the town and his friend Anik Ahmed, 28, an inhabitant of Chalk Atitha village under Sadar upazila.

Eye witnesses said the accident occurred when a tractor hit victim’s motorcycle as it was crossing the tractor in the area, leaving motorcycle riders dead on the spot.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naogaon Sadar Thana Md Anowar Hossain said police recovered the bodies and sent those to Sadar Hospital morgue.  A case was filed with the Sadar Thana in this connection, added the OC.

In Pirojpur, a member of Pirojpur Zila Parishad was killed in a road accident in front of the Fire Service Bhaban in the town yesterday.   

The deceased was identified as Qamruzzaman Shikder Mithu, 42, son of Habibur Rahman Shikder of Panchpara village under Sadar upazila of the district.

Police said the accident occurred when an Easy-bike hit Mithu’s motorcycle from behind in the area as he was going to Zila Parishad Office.

Mithu was rushed to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Meanwhile, the law enforcers, in separate anti-drug drives, arrested 226 people altogether in different districts in the country yesterday. Among the arrestees, 85 people were held from Dinajpur, 81 from Jamalpur, 33 from Sherpur and 27 from Gazipur district.
