UGC cautions students on admission to 23 problem-ridden varsities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday cautioned students and their guardians about seeking admission to 23 problem-ridden private universities. It said those universities were beset with problems, including cases pending in courts and were operating by obtaining stay orders.

The UGC urged the students to take admission to private universities having government and UGC approval and called upon them to collect all information from the UGC website www.ugc.gov.bdbefore seeking admission.

The UGC published the list of the problematic universities on its website yesterday.

As per the list, IBAIS University has conflicts within its Board of Trustees (BOT). The BOT has split into two groups and both have their cases in the court. The university is running its activities by securing a court stay order.

The government has shut down two universities — American Bangladesh University and the University of Comilla.

On the other hand, Southern University Bangladesh was operating by obtaining a court stay order.

The UGC said four universities had unapproved campuses. The institutions are the University of Science and Technology, Chittagong, People's University of Bangladesh, the University of South Asia and the Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology.

Four universities have conflicts within the BOT with court cases being fought by them. The universities are Sylhet International University, Britannia University in Comilla, Premier University in Chittagong and the Southern University Bangladesh in Chittagong.

The court has closed Queens University and Darul Ihsan University and all its outer campuses, the UGC said.

Gono Biswabidyalaya is running some programmes like MBBS, BDS and Physiotherapy after obtaining a stay order from the High Court.

Eight universities had been denied permission to admit students, but got clearance to do so only recently. The universities are Rabindra Srijankola University at Keraniganj, Dhaka, Rupayan AKM Shamsuzzoha University, Narayanganj, Anwar Khan Modern University, the ZNRF University of Management Sciences, the Ahsania Mission University of Science and Technology, Shah Makhdum Management University, Rajshahi, Khulna Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah University and Bandarban University.

In addition, the UGC said the vice-chancellor of a university was the main person to sign certificates. But in 91 running private universities, only 60 universities had Vice-Chancellors, 20 had pro-VCs and 44 had treasurers. These VCs, Pro-VCs and treasurers are appointed by the President.

UGC sources said the students should check all information about the universities before admission.
