Many areas in the capital and its suburbs became waterlogged following three hours of downpour yesterday (Wednesday) morning, causing traffic snarls. Similar reports also came from Demra and Narayanganj, 12km south of Dhaka.

Met Office sources said they recorded 52mm of rainfall in the city between 9am and 12 noon. People had a tough time negotiating waterlogged streets and traffic stood standstill.

Rush hour commuters, office-goers and workers had a trying time travelling to their destinations. The stuation was the same in Narayanganj and Mirpur, as well as in the old quarters of the city where many streets were flooded, making it difficult for vehicles to move, causing long tail backs.

Commuters on their way to work at Tejgaon from the southern city suburbs of Jatrabari and Demra were also inconvenienced because of  traffic snarls due to waterlogging. Even smaller streets of Tejgaon were logjammed.

Abdur Rahman, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office, said such snap rain would end in the next couple of days. But it would not be all over. There could be drizzles and light rain, but not so much to cause inconvenience.

Streets were waterlogged because of the failure by the city authorities and utilities like WASA, which maintains the capital’s drainage system that works as a storm sewerage system. They perhaps failed to read the weather.

Meteorologists have been talking about the unusual behaviour of the weather in May, usually considered a dry month.

A resident of Bangshal in the city’s old quarters reported that areas like Najirabazar and Sikkatuli near his home were flooded because uncleaned drains were unable to flush out the rain water. The drains were virtually clogged with polythene bags, he said.
