Lightning strikes kill 5 in 4 dists

At least four people were killed in lightning strikes in Bogura, Mymensingh, Tangail and Chuadanga districts yesterday.

In Bogura, a farmer was killed as lightning struck him at Kalrpara-Dhulauri village under Dhunat upazila of the district yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Zahidul Islam Pramanik, 45, a resident of

the same area. Police sources said lightning struck Zahidul at about 10am while he was working at his paddy field near his house. He died on the spot.

In Mymensingh, two people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes yesterday.

The deceased were Sekandar Ali, 60, a farmer of Sree Rampur village in Mymensingh sadar and Ershad Mia, 26, a fisherman of village Kalakanda in Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh, police sources said.

Sekandar died on the spot while harvesting paddy at local Naptakuri beel yesterday noon, said officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Kotwali Police Station.

Fisherman Ershan died on the spot after being hit by lightning while catching fishes in Rowa Beel of Muktagacha yesterday afternoon, said Ali Ahmed Mollah, officer-in-charge of Muktagacha Police Station.

In Tangail, a carpenter identified as Omer Soni 19, son of Fazol Hoque of village Doykha in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district was killed by lightning strike yesterday noon. Hafizur Rahman, a neighbor said Omer Sani is a carpenter by profession. But he left the profession for the time being. Yesterday he went to the paddy field for harvesting in the rain with his father.  He was carrying paddy on his head. Suddenly a thunder bolt stroke him leaving him dead on the spot.

In Chuadanga, a student of class VIII was killed by lightning at village Mochainagar in Alamdanga upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Rifajuddin, 14, son of Shahajul Hoque of village Mochainagar and a student of Chandamary-Khaibakhali High School in Alamdanga upazila of the district.

According to family sources, when he was returning home from a field of the village with their cows, a thunderbolt hit leaving him dead on the spot.
