Tigers’ batting capable of taming Afghan bowling

At a time when Afghanistan’s bowling variation has been the center of all discussion, Bangladesh senior player Mahmudullah Riyad insisted that their batting depth is capable of nullifying the threat if they can click according to their potential.

Mahmudullah has no reservation to admit leg-spinner Rashid Khan and off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman as special talent like Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim but he refused to be cynical.

“I think we have a good depth in batting which is capable of quashing their (Afghanistan) bowling variation,” Mahmudullah said yesterday. “They have two world class spinners in Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman and they are doing very good in the IPL. I have earlier played Rashid but I am yet to play Mujeeb. The series will be challenging. We need to apply ourselves right way and it’s the only with which we could bring the result in our favour.”

Bangladesh have played only one T20 match against Afghanistan, that too in 2014 and won that game. The two teams faced each other five times in ODI format with Bangladesh winning three in contrast of Afghanistan’s two. Though Bangladesh have the edge over the Test’s newest nation, Afghanistan had already proved they could spring a surprise.

This time these two teams will play a three-match T20 series, beginning in the first week of June in Afghan’s adopted venue in Dehradun, India.

“They are No. 8 while we are No. 10 in the rankings, so it’s also an opportunity for us. It’s an important series. We know if we can win the series we can improve our rankings,” Mahmudullah remarked.

He admitted that in the T20 format, the strength of the team will matter little as they would have to apply them well on particular day.

“But there is nothing like strong or weak team in this format. You have to grab your opportunities because you have little time to comeback here if you slip up in this format.”

Keeping the mind of Rashid threat, Bangladesh brought up leg-spinner Jubair Hossain Likhon in the practice camp and tried to invent some shots with which they can deal with him.

“As I said earlier, we have to emphasize on our batting since we got a good depth here. Our bowling department also has been doing good—we have the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Nazmul Islam Opu, Mehidy Hasan Miraj. But their bowling variation and ours is totally different. Whatever it is, I think we just should focus on our strength instead of thinking much about them,” Mahmudullah opined.

Mahmudullah though established him as the batting linchpin of Bangladesh team, he indeed started his career as a potential all-rounder. After a long interval, he started bowling regularly in the last Nidahas Trophy and expected to continue it. A T20 in which Bangladesh beat Afghanistan, Mahmudullah conceded just eight runs in fours over to scalp one wicket.

“I started bowling regularly in Nidahas Trophy. I am though working with fitness and batting right now, hopefully will start bowling very soon.”
