Form new EC, demands BNP

Accusing the Election Commission (EC) of failing to conduct the just concluded Khulna City Corporation polls in a fair manner, the BNP yesterday (Thursday) demanded that a new commission be formed. “The current EC is not capable of conducting a credible national election. That’s why we are demanding a new commission,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press conference at the party headquarters in the city.

The BNP leader said it would not be possible for the EC to conduct the national election when it cannot hold a civic election in a fair manner and ensure the voting rights of the people.

“We've been repeatedly saying that we want the resignation of the EC and formation of a new commission,” he added.

His comments came following a meeting of the party two days after the Khulna City Corporation polls, in which the Awami League candidate won the mayoral post with a big margin of votes. The Khulna civic polls have again exposed the truth that holding a free and fair election is not possible under the present government, said Fakhrul.

The BNP leader condemned the “snatching of victory” by Awami League cadres through terrorism, vote fraud and various irregularities.

Replying to a question, Fakhrul said the ruling party has deprived people of their voting rights in Tuesday’s polls by rigging and capture of polling stations with a new strategy.

He expressed regret that though the imprisoned party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, is seriously ill, the government is not providing her with proper treatment.

He demanded that the government release Khaleda and allow her to receive better treatment.

The BNP leader announced a 10-day programme to mark the 37th death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman. The programmes include placing of wreaths at the mazar of the late president, offering fateha, holding discussions and exhibition of photography on Ziaur Rahman, and distribution of cooked food among the destitute.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokan and Ruhul Quddus Talukder, among others, were present at the briefing.
