Stern action against non-passing schools

The recent SSC results have given us a lot of young students, passing the first hurdle of academic life. The examination results have also shown that while some schools have performed brilliantly, many others have not even had a single successful examinee. Shockingly, 109 institutions carry the ignominy of not having a single successful SSC candidate. While the reduction of the pass rate has been attributed to strict invigilation plus emphasis on creative segment, the total failure rate for more than one hundred schools is disquieting.

The authority has already asked these schools as to why their Monthly Pay Order (MPO) facility, official recognition and teaching permission should not be rescinded. Such firm measures are essential because, otherwise, non performing schools will carry on taking benefits, resulting in the entrenchment of a profoundly unethical culture. It’s believed that many of these schools, of which 96 are madrasas, there are more teachers than students.

It’s safe to say that in the name of education, an unscrupulous business is being carried out where academia works as a façade for blatant dishonesty. In fact, we may be looking at the thin end of the wedge here! The pertinent question to ask is why so many madrasas or religious studies schools are found to be among the non-passing institutions. According to reports, in one madrasa in Patuakhali, eleven persons passed in thirteen years.

Reportedly, investigation is being carried out with stringent measures on the cards because, the monthly MPO for a teacher is Tk17000. This money can easily be diverted to schools which are showing results and where there is some disenchantment among teachers for not receiving the monthly government payment.

Practically speaking, it would be a complex task to monitor all these schools in question, therefore, asking the local administration to send reports to the upazila office or the district commissioner for action will bring immediate results. As the government’s prompt response is laudable, a thorough look into the 109 schools is essential since there is a belief that these institutions got their recognition plus other facilities by manipulating political connection.

Bluntly put, if Bangladesh is to move towards middle income status then the first anomaly she needs to uproot is the exploitation of political links to conceal, condone and perpetuate degenerate practices in education.
