Family confined to house for one year in Mirzapur

Our Correspondent, Tangail

A housewife along with her two children has been confined to  a house at Asgana village in Mirzapur upazila for the last one year. Hasina Begum, 30, wife of expatriate Fanu Khan, alleged that some headmen of the village have been repressing her on false defamation charges after she turned down their illicit demand. The headmen created a barrier with bamboo poles around the house to prevent the inmates from going out.
Hasina said she cannot send her children to school. She has been leading a miserable life in isolation,
Vested group, allegedly led by Omer Khan, 30, Korban Khan, 50, Forman Khan, 40, Siraj Khan, 23, Selina Akhter, 35, of the village were trying to get illegal advantages, which Hasina refused to offer. These people have stopped her daughter Sadia, 11, a student of class-V and son Asif, 8, a student of class-II from going to a local government primary school, she said.
Hasina has raised the issue with local UP member Abul Hossen for justice, but in vain. Hakim Khan, father of Hasina, alleged that the vested group has disconnected power line, looted Hasina’s house and removed a tube well from her house premises.
During a visit to the house of Hasina on Tuesday some local journalists found that Hasina and her family have remained separated from others in the village.
Human Rights activist Advocate Ataur Rahman Azad said the incident is a violation of human rights.
Officer-in-Charge of Mirzapur police station Main Uddin said: “This is unfortunate. Necessary steps will be taken in this regard.”
Mirzapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Masum Ahmed said he has instructed police to arrest the headmen who have confined the family.
