Relatives anxious for updates

STAFF REPORTER

Family members of some of the passengers, who were on-board the BS-211 flight of US-Bangla Airlines, are waiting with baited breath to get updates about the fate of their near ones. Some of the relatives were found in front of the US-Bangla Airlines office at Baridhara in the capital, demanding to know what happened to their family members. SM Abul Kalam Azad, brother of a government official who was on-board the plane, was seen crying outside the office. Azad said he does not know whether his sister, Umme Salima, is alive or dead. Salima, a Planning Ministry official left for Nepal for a three-day official visit. Shaon Hossain, son of Kabir Hossain, was also there in front of the US-Bangla office. He told The Independent that his father was in the flight. “I was informed by a relative from Nepal that he didn’t die. He is severely injured and is getting treatment in a hospital now.”

Meanwhile, a passenger named Rokibul Hasan has reportedly died in the crash. His wife Dr Imrana Kabir Hasi, an assistant professor of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) got severely injured in the crash, said Prof Dr Robiul Islam, provost of Shaheed Hamid hall at RUET.

The couple went to Nepal to enjoy holidays, Prof Robiul added. Several photos surfacing in the social media claimed five people of a family from Gazipur were on board the flight.

The passengers are Mr FH Priok, his wife Mrs Almun Nahar Annie, their child Tamarra Prionmoyee, his cousin Mehedi Hasan and Mehedi’s wife Saiyada Kamrunnahar Shwarna. However, their fate could not be known as of yet. The embassy of Bangladesh in Kathmandu has opened hotlines with two embassy officials to deliver updates for family members and friends of the passengers. The officials are counselor Mohammad Al Alamul Emam and first secretary Asit Baran Sarker with mobile numbers +9779810100401 and +9779861467422 respectively.
