Public support for AL nearly zero: Ershad

STAFF REPORTER

Public support for the Awami League (AL) has nosedived to nearly zero, Jatiya Party (JP) chairman HM Ershad claimed yesterday (Monday). “The Prime Minister has said that she has turned the nation into a middle-earner country. Then why are 50 lakh people still living in slums? Why is there no food and work in villages?” the JP chief wondered. He was addressing a representative meeting at the city’s Diploma Engineers' Institution. The JP organised the meeting prior to holding a grand rally at Suhrawardy Uddyan on March 24. Ershad, who is also the special envoy of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said, “The whole world was taken aback by the harassment of

women by ruling party men on March 7. Nothing can be more shameful than this. How dare you (government) talk with pride before the public?" Elections held recently have been peaceful and credible, Ershad claimed. “We hope that future polls too will be credible. The whole world will be watching the next national polls, and it should be fair and credible.”

“I am speaking in the presence of the almighty Allah. If the next polls are fair and credible, we will win,” the JP chairman said. Ershad said many party leaders claimed that there are no activists in the JP. “We will prove it on March 24 by holding a grand rally at Suhrawardy Uddyan,” he asserted.

JP co-chairman GM Quader, JP secretary general Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Zia Uddin Ahmed Bablu, MP, and Syed Abu Hossain Babla, MP, spoke on the occasion.
