Gender and Disaster Network hub launched at DU

A country hub of Gender and Disaster Network (GDN) was launched on Sunday at Dhaka University (DU) with a view to pushing the gender agenda forward in the disaster management context in the country.

Prof Nasreen Ahmad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of DU, inaugurated the GDN Bangladesh Country Hub at RC Majumdar Arts auditorium on  the campus.

UN Women Bangladesh and Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS) of DU organised the launching ceremony.

Country Representative of UN Women Shoko Ishikawa, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohsin, Deputy Secretary of Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Abdul Karim were present at the programme. Prof Mahbuba Nasreen, Director of IDMVS presided over the function. In the GDN Bangladesh Hub, individuals, organisations and institutions (government and non-government) working on gender and disaster management issues will be the key members.  The GDN Bangladesh Hub will add value to GDN globally as well as the  equitable and sustainable development agenda of the country. The network will be a knowledge sharing and advocacy platform to promote gender issues more effectively in Bangladesh.

Seminar on river economy held at IU

KUSHTIA: The Statistics and Economics department jointly organised a day-long seminar on ‘Role of university to promote river economy’ held at Islamic University (IU) yesterday at Bir Shrestho Hamidur Rahman auditorium around 11am.

Dr Khalikuzzaman, Chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) was present the programme as the chief guest with the University Vice-Chancellor Prof Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari in the chair.

IU treasurer Prof M Selim Toha, Dr Zosim Uddin, DMD of PKSF, M Abdul Muyeed, Chairman of Economics department were the special guests and Altaf Hossain Rasel, Chairman of Statistics department was the moderator with Dr M Mamun, Dr Alamgir Hossain Bhuiya and Dr M Abu Raihan, Professor of Economics departmen, Assistant Professor Partho Sarathi Laskar, Abdul Jalil Pathan and Shahed Ahmed, Lecturer Mithila Tanjil and Shamima Nasrin were present here.  

EWU holds discussion on Int’l Women’s Day

East West University (EWU) organised a discussion marking the International Women's Day on its campus at Aftabnagar in the capital yesterday, says a press release.

 The theme of the programme was 'Time is now: Rural and Urban Activist Transforming Women's Lives'.

Speaker of the National Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP, was the chief guest. She said, “Despite being equal in merit, the participation of women in the workplace in our country is only 35 per cent. Women's empowerment is being restricted due to family, social and mental constraints”.  Therefore, to remove these restrictions on women's rights, she urged men to join the struggle of women for their empowerment.

Dr Nazneen Ahmed, Senior Research Fellow of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), and Dr Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), took part in the discussion.  Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson, Board of Trustees of EWU, and former governor of the Bangladesh Bank, Prof MM Shahidul Hassan, Vice-Chancellor and Prof Fakrul Alam, Pro Vice-Chancellor of EWU, were also present.

They highlighted the progress of women in Bangladesh in the last four decades. While urging all to be vocal about their rights until equal participation is guaranteed in all cases.
