Mosquito menace on RU campus

Mosquito menace on RU campus

Mosquitoes are increasing alarmingly on the Rajshahi University campus because of a poor drainage system, decaying garbage and the reluctance to use dustbins.

Swarms of mosquitoes are making life miserable for students, teachers and officials on the campus. Besides, the dining halls and canteens on the campus are contributing to the spread of a foul smell, which, along with the dumped garbage, is aiding the multiplication of mosquitoes. Students of residential halls are facing the sting. They finish the job of setting mosquito nets in the evening and have to continue their study inside those nets.

Dustbins have not been installed in many places. So, garbage is piling up next to academic and residential buildings and even on the streets. Waste water is stagnating because of the garbage. All these are creating fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

University authorities say it is the duty of the Rajshahi City Corporation to clean up the mess as the RU falls within the purview of the city corporation. Mosquitoes are spreading diseases such as malaria, dengue, yellow fever, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis, and chikungunya among the students, teachers and other employees, said Dr Nadira Megum, deputy medical officer at the RU medical centre.

These problems cannot be resolved overnight without creating  awareness among people. Moreover, the government should take immediate steps to clean up the campus, she added.

The university currently has some 33,874 students. Of them, 22,290 are male and 11,584 female students. The RU has 1,201 teachers, according to the university's annual report of 2016–17. There are piles of garbage beside 18 residential halls of the university, next to the academic buildings.

Temporary food shops are situated in different parts of the campus and around the stadium. These spots have become mosquito-breeding centres as they have not been cleaned for a long time. A visit to the campus revealed that the dustbins behind the Shahidullha Arts Building and on the west side of Ismail Hossen Siraji building has not been cleaned for a long time.

It was also found that playgrounds and the basketball court near Shayeed Amir Ali Hall and Shah Mukdum Hall are being used as garbage-dumping grounds. The pillars and fences of the basketball and handball courts had come unstuck four to five years ago and are now covered with tall grass. Sources said open drains run past  Banghabondhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, the medical centre, Shah Mukhdum Hall, Sayed Amir Ali Hall, Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, Madar Bux Hall, Begum Khaleda Zia Hall, Tapushi Rabeya Hall, Begum Rokeya Hall, and teacher and staff quarters on the campus.

Shrubs and bushes growing in different parts of the campus have not been attended to for a long time. As a result, mosquito attacks have increased massively at Zuberi Field, Shaheed Minar, Tukitaki and Iblish Premises, Sabash Bangladesh, and Paschim Para areas.

A teacher, who lives ion the campus, said, “We're facing various problems due to the mosquito attack. It's impossible to study for long hours without using mosquito-repellent coils.”

He urged the authorities to take action to resolve the problem soon.
