Ton-up Pappu steers Legends

Opener Salahuddin Pappu hit a fluent century as Legends of Rupganj surged to the second spot of Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League points table, securing a 26-run win over Kalabagan Krira Chakra at BKSP ground yesterday.

The victory meant only two points separated Rupganj and league leaders Abahani Limited with the former collecting 12 points in nine matches.

Abahani which once dominated the point table with at least six points ahead of all the team now faced the heat with other team gradually closing the gaps. In nine matches, the Dhanmondi outfit now have 14 points. Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club are in the third place with 11 points while Shinepukur Sporting Club and Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity occupied the next two spot with 10 points each.

Pappu smashed 125 off just 95, slamming 12 fours and eight sixes as Legends of Rupganj compiled a hefty 314 for five in 50 overs, after which their bowlers dismissed Kalabagan’ for 288 in 49.5 overs.

His whirlwind knock came to an end after Taibur Rahman got the better of him. Captain Naeem Islam then propelled the side past 300, aided by Parvej Rasool’s 32. Indian recruit Shreevats Gowsami hit 75 and Mohammad Ashraful played 64 runs knock to keep the side on course. Parvej Rasool and Asif Hasan claimed three wickets apiece to deal the blow.

Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity produced an upset, beating Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by six wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, a victory that brightened their prospect of finishing the group phase amongst the six teams.

Tanvir Ahmed grabbed four for 30 and Anjum Ahmed snapped up three for 16 to trigger the collapse as Dhanmondi Club were bowled out for 167 in 48 overs. Tanbir Hayder was the lone fighter with 52 runs while next best was opener Shykat Ali’s 24.

Khelaghar stumbled in pursuit of small total, being reduced to 70 for three but Ashok Maneria helped the side get over the line, hitting 58 with seven boundaries. His 97 runs partnership with Rafsan Al Mahmud (49) was the key as Khelagahar overhauled the target in 40 overs.

Agrani Bank on the other hand raised the prospect of avoiding relegation league, stunning Brothers Union by three wickets in a high scoring match at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.

Opener Mizanur Rahman scored a 120 ball-102, clobbering nine fours and three sixes as Brothers Union racked up a respectable 289 for six in 50 overs. Four batsmen made half-centuries in reply to help the side sail the home with five balls to spare.

Indian recruit Rishi Dhawan was the highest scorer for Agrani Bank with 70 runs. Opener Azmir Ahmed made 65, Salman Hossain scored 63 and Jahid Javed contributed 55.
