Locals protest dumping of coal in residential areas

Jessore: Locals have protested the open dumping of coal in open-air locations of Nawapara industrial and residential area of the districton Sunday, reports UNB.

Nawapara industrial area is the largest wholesale market for imported goods like coal, rice, fertilizer and stones.

The locals arranged the rally where former Nawapara Union Parishad chairman Shah Ashrafuzzaman, journalist Mostafa Faruk Ahmed, former national level footballer Jahidul Islam and people from all corners of the society were present at the rally.

The speakers urged the government and authorities concerned to take steps against hazardous dumping of coal in the residential areas and open places.

Amu asks students to read Bangabandhu’s biography

JHALOKATI: Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu today urged students to read the biography of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for building themselves as good citizens, reports BSS.

“Students will have to read the books of good writers…they will also have to read the biography of Bangabandhu,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at the Annual Sports and Cultural Competition of Siddhakathi Secondary High School at Nalchity Upazila in Jhalokati District.

He also called upon the students to give attention on sports for making them physically and mentally fit.

Nalchity Upazila chairman M Younus Laskar, assistant superintendent of police (circle) M Mozammel Hossain and managing committee chairman of the school Khandakar Mujibur Rahman, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Youth found dead

Dinajpur: Police recovered a slaughtered body of a young man from Hili in Hakimpur upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Mithun, 27, son of Shahadat Hossain, a resident of Chandipur village.

Locals spotted the body around 8pm and informed police.

Police later recovered the body, said Abdur Sabur, officer-in-charge of Hakimpur Police Station.

Fire guts 20 shops in Chandpur

At least 20 shops were gutted in a fire that broke out at a local kitchen market in the district town yesterday morning.

The fire originated at a shop in the Paul Bazar around 6:30am and soon engulfed the adjacent shops, said Faruk Ahmed, senior station manager of Chandpur fire station.

Being informed, one unit of firefighters from the fire station rushed to the spot and put out the fire after half an hour of frantic efforts.

Affected shop owner Mizanur Rahman said fire totally burnt his grocery shop and godown. The loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 50 lakh only for him.

Road crash kills 2 in Faridpur    

Faridpur: Two motorcyclists were killed and another was injured as their vehicle hit a roadside tree at Lohartek village in Charbhadrasan upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as Masud Munshi, son of Rashid Munshi and Mehedi Hasan Mithu, son of Wahab Sheikh while the injured is Arshed Bepari, son of Kalam Bepari.

Azad Khan, chairman of Charbhadrasan union parishad, said Masud and Mithu along with Arshed went to Faridpur Police Lines to know their written results of constable recruitment test. The accident took place as the rider lost control over the wheels around 10:30pm and hit the tree while they were returning from Faridpur Police Lines, leaving them critically injured.
