Weeklong theatre festival of Dhaka Padatik underway

A weeklong theatre festival is underway at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segun Bagicha of the capital. Dhaka Padatik, one of the most prominent theatre troupes in the country, has organised the event to celebrate its 38th founding anniversary.

Dhaka University vice chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the festival as the chief guest on Friday on the academy premises, while BSA Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky was present as special guest. Chaired by Secretary General of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation Akhtaruzzaman, actor Nader Chowdhury delivered speech at the event.

The festival was opened by Dhaka Padatik’s new play ‘The Trial of Surja Sen’ on Friday evening. Based on the anti-British movement, ‘Trial Surya Sen’ has been produced under the composition and direction of Masum Aziz.

Today, on the third day of the festival the host troupe will stage its play ‘Hefazat’ directed by Nader Chowdhury. The play criticizes the government’s indifference towards the powerful quarters despite its knowledge of their involvement in anti-social activities such as trafficking of women and children.

On the other hand, one local play and an Indian play were brought to the stage yesterday, on the second day of the festival. BSA staged award- winning play ‘Eksho Bosta Chal’ (One Hundred Sacks of Rice) at the National Theatre Hall, while Kolyani Natya Charcha Kendra from Kolkata staged its play ‘Dhubo Putro’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA.
