Abahani concede 2nd defeat

Abahani Limited conceded only second defeat of the season following their three-run defeat to Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club in an adrenaline-pumping mach at the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League yesterday.

The hard-fought victory at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium propelled Prime Doleswar to the second spot of the point table with 11 points in nine matches but they are still three points behind the league leader Abahani Limited.

Medium pacer Farhad Reza and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny were the architect of the victory as they held the nerve in the last two overs to prevent Abahani from a victory. Both of them claimed three wickets apiece but more than taking the wickets they would be contended with their effort in the last two overs that basically sealed the deal.

Farhad Reza particularly made the serious damage by claiming the big wicket of Mohammad Mithun in the penultimate over as the batsman who was top scorer for Abahani with 60 runs almost drove the side to the victory.

Reza gave away 11 runs but Mithun’s wicket meant Abahani were left with just one wicket and 10 runs win away from the victory. Sunny though conceded a boundary in the second ball of the last over, he finally took the wicket of Ariful Islam Sobuj to deny Abahani a victory.

The Dhanmondi outfit finally were bowled out for 229 in 49.5 overs after Prime Doleshwar managed a mediocre 232 for nine in 50 overs.

Two sixty plus knocks from Fazle Mahmud and Farhad Hossain were instrumental in Prime Doleshwar’s total after they opted to bat first. They put on  132 runs for the fourth wicket after Abahani pacer Ariful Islam Sobuj sliced the top order in a gem of medium pace bowling.

Fazle Mahmud clubbed seven fours in his 119 ball-68 while Farhad Hossain sent the ball across the rope twice in his 63 off 80. However after their departure, in the space of just four runs, opened the gate for Abahani to make inroads further.

Abahani’s Delhi-born left-arm spinner Manan Sharma was to the fore to keep the target chase-able with the ably support of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza who continued his rich vein of bowling form with two for 47. Sharma was the highest wicket-taker with four for 44.

Abahani also had a disastrous start, losing two four just 26 runs before Anamul Haque Bijoy and captain Nasir Hossain helped the side hit back. They shared 52 runs before Farhad Reza broke through with the wicket of Bijoy for 34.

Nasir Hossain made a struggling 53, hitting six fours but his departure landed Abahani in a huge trouble. Abahani found a saviour in Mithun who guided the lower order astutely and kept the side on course of victory amid regular wickets falling but a sensational penultimate over for Farhad Reza scripted Abahani downfall at the end.

Mithun slammed four fours and one six in his 61 ball-60. Farhad Reza however was adjudged man of the match for his shrewd bowling performance and 26 ball-28 with the willow.
