BSF Sector Commander Mridul Sen said that at a bilateral meeting between the BGB and BSF chiefs in October 2017, a decision was taken to make the area a "crime-free zone".

The main aim was to prevent trafficking of women and children, drug, arms smuggling, anti-social and criminal acts.

The BGB has set up border surveillance devices, such as closed-circuit cameras, searchlights, thermal images to prevent crime in the Bangladesh part of the border declared "crime-free zone". At the same time, the BGB has taken the initiative to create awareness among the local people about crime prevention. The BGB and the BSF will carry out surveillance through mutual cooperation and coordination to prevent cross-border crimes such as smuggling, women and child trafficking, human trafficking, drug trafficking, arms and explosives, and terrorist and anti-social activities.

Employment opportunities will be created to stop criminal activities. The BGB and BSF director generals said drones will be used in this border area to prevent criminal activities. The two border forces will involve the district administration, NGOs and residents of border areas.  If the pilot project is successful, then the entire 4,996km border will be brought under the "crime-free zone".
