Early summer vegetables still dearer

Veg prices fall in kitchen markets

Prices of vegetables in the capital’s kitchen markets have gone down from those of last week because of increased supply. Farmers are selling away their crops, fearing the warm weather that heralds the transition from winter to spring.

However, prices of early summer vegetables are higher compared to last week. Snake gourds, bitter gourds and pointed gourds are being sold for Tk. 60–90 per kg. Prices of summer vegetables will remain high this month due to low supply.

Traders say the demand for early summer vegetables is always high at first. However, the prices will start going down within a week or two, they add.

Owing to adequate supplies in the past few weeks, onions, eggplants, beans, carrots, cauliflowers, cabbages, turnips, red spinach, garlic and other vegetables are being sold in the same prices as in the previous week.

The prices of eggs, chicken and mutton have also remain unchanged.

Visiting several retail kitchen markets in Dhaka, including Karwan Bazar, this correspondent found that vendors were selling some vegetables at a lower price compared to last week.

Traders say the supplies of common vegetables, such as gourd and tomato, have increased, resulting in the fall in prices. The price of gourd has dropped by more than half compared to last week, they add.

Gourd was being sold for Tk. 100 per kg only a month ago, but it is now available for only Tk. 25-30. Tomato prices have also gone down.

In some of the kitchen’s market, tomato is being sold for Tk. 10 per kg. Only a week ago, the price of tomato was Tk. 30 per kg. “This is tomato’s high season. As there have been adequate supplies, its price has gone down,” a vendor said.

Onions, eggplants, beans, carrots, cauliflowers, cabbages, turnips, red spinach and other vegetables are available at a fairly cheap price. As in the last few months, the prices of eggs, boiler chicken, beef and mutton have remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, cauliflower is being sold for Tk. 25–30 per piece as in the previous week. Cabbage is available at the same price.

As of last week, turnip was sold for Tk. 20–25. Besides, eggplant was sold at Tk 30–40 per kg. Beans were sold for Tk. 30-40 a kg.

The price of green chili is now Tk. 70–80 per kg.

Onion prices have remained same as in previous week. In the retail market, onion is being sold for Tk. 40-45 per kg. Imported onions are also being sold at the same price.
