Comilla boy loses wrist in crude bomb blast

Comilla: A college student suffered serious injuries in a crude bomb explosion at Nazira Bazar Goshnagar in Burichong upazila early Thursday, reports UNB.

The injured was identified as Riazul Islam, 17, a student of Comilla City College.

The blast occurred on the ground floor of his grandfather’s four-storey building where Riazul and his cousin Sohag used to live, said Md Shah Abid Hossain, superintendent of Comilla Police after visiting the spot around 10pm.

He said Riazul lost one of his wrists and sustained injuries in another hand in the blast around 2am that also broke the door and two windows of the room.

After the explosion, locals rushed in and rescued the injured. He is now being treated under police custody at Comilla Medical College Hospital.

Police also detained Sohag, 14, who received minor injuries, during the blast.

Law enforcers also cordoned off the house after the incident.

A bomb disposal unit from Dhaka reached the spot on Thursday night and collected samples.

Minor girl ‘raped’, one held

Munshiganj: Police arrested a young man allegedly for violating a minor girl at Malirpathar area in Sadar upazila on Thursday afternoon, reports UNB.

The accused was identified as Uzzol Hossain, 26, son of late Chand Mia of Rampal area of the same upazila, who has been staying at a rented house of the area.

Sources said Uzzol forcibly brought the class-6 student, daughter of the landlord, to his room around 5.30pm and violated her leaving her severely injured.

She was taken to Munshiganj Modern Hospital where she was provided with first aid. Later she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

On information, police rushed in and held the man from the spot, said officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Alomgir Hossain.

Uzzol confessed the rape incident, added the OC.

Man arrested with 2kg gold

Satkhira: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested an alleged smuggler along with 2.183 kg gold from Badamtala near Bhomra land port in Sadar upazila on Thursday evening, reports UNB.

The arrestee is Aziz Hasan, son of Golam Sarwar of Mahmudpur village in the upazila.

Subedar Shafiqur Rahman of Bhomra BGB border outpost said a team of paramilitary force, led by him, challenged Aziz at the land port road around 7pm on information that a consignment of gold was being smuggled to India.

Twelve gold bars weighing 2.183 kg were recovered searching his body, he said, adding that they later detained Aziz.

90mts ‘Kabikha’ rice seized in C’nawabganj, 3 held

Chapainawabganj: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive seized 90 mts rice meant for ‘Kabikha’ (Kajer Binimaye Khadya-Food for Work) programme of the government from a rice mill in Atahar Bulonpur area of Sadar upazila on Thursday night, reports UNB.

The elite force members also arrested food godown officer Golam Rabbani and two members of Jhilim union parishad Bithi Rani Karmakar and Aminul Islam in connection with the seizure.

RAB sources said upazila administration allotted 340 metric tonnes rice under ‘Kabikha’ programme to build cluster village in front of Ranihati College for landless people. A five member committee, including Bithi Rani as its president, was formed for the implementation of the project. She collected 90 metric tonnes rice from Chapainawabganj food godown on Thursday noon, said squadron leader Mohammad Syed Abdullah Al Murad, camp commander of Rab-5.

Violating the government rules, they kept the collected rice, which was supposed to be kept in Shibganj upazila food godown, in the mill for selling those in black market.

Executive magistrate Nayan Kumar Rajbongsi sealed the rice mill. Later, RAB filed a case against the three and Akbar Hossain, manager of the mill, under the Special Powers Act.

Body recovered in Pirojpur

OUR CORRESPONDEN, Pirojpur

Police recovered the body of a youth from a canal in Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur district yesterday. He was missing for two days.

The deceased was identified as Mahfuz Miah, 20, son of Abul Kalam Mia of village Sangitkathi in Nesarabad upazila.

Police and local sources said Mahfuz went out of his house on Wednesday noon and did not return. Yesterday morning locals spotted a dead body floating in a canal of Khairkathi village in the upazila around 10am and informed police. Later, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Pirojpur morgue for autopsy.

KM Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Nardarabad Police Station said a case was filed in this connection.

Truck driver killed in road crash

Pabna: A truck driver was killed and two other people were injured in a head-on collision between two trucks at Shoroi Kandi in Ishwardi upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.The accident took place around 7am when the stone-laden Kushtia-bound truck collided with another cotton-laden truck, leaving the driver dead on the spot and two others injured. The injured were admitted to Ishwardi upazila health complex.
