Dhaka, Rangpur seal semifinal berths

Dhaka Division along with Rangpur Division sealed their semifinal spots when they edged out their respective rivals of the Bangladesh Youth Games at the Bir Shrestra Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur yesterday.

In boys’ quarter-final tie, Dhaka Division made a flying start by mauling Barisal Division by 5-0 goals on the opening day fixture of the final round of the first-ever Bangladesh Youth Games.

It’s Maruf Ahmed, who opened the scoring for Dhaka in the eighth minute into the first half. He later netted twice just before the short whistle.

After the resumption, no teams yet to score till 35 minutes. Joychandra Barman stretched the advantage for Dhaka further with his double strikes when he scored in the 80th and 83rd minute respectively.  

Tawhidul Islam Hridoy flattened Barisal by nailing the last screw in the 85th minute into the game.  

On the other hand, Rangpur thrashed Mymensingh by 4-2 goals in the exciting second match of the day at the same venue.

None can produce any goal till 64 minutes into the game due to their poor finishing skills. Arif Hossain broke the stalemate of the match for Mymensingh in the 65th minute. Just two minutes later, Apon Chandra levelled the margin for Rangpur 1-1. Merajul Islam Irfan brought Rangpur back when he scored in the 71st minute and took the lead 2-1. Omar Faruk Mithu widened the advantage further with double strikes what he scored in the space of six minutes in the 80th and 86th minute correspondingly. Arif Hossain finally was able to reduce their margin for Mymensingh when he struck his second goal in the injury time.

After Football, young shooters are getting down in the competition before the format start of the Youth Games at the shooting range of the Bangladesh Shooting Federation (BSF) in Gulshan today.

Young shooters, who already arrived in Dhaka from different divisions across the country, will take part in a preliminary competition after enlisting their names for Divisional teams. Then the federation will select them for the final round. The Games will be formally opened on March 10.
