BCL ‘beat up’ theatre activist at RU

UNB

Rajshahi University: A group of leaders and activists of Rajshahi University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League allegedly beat up a theatre activist on campus on Tuesday night over a trivial matter, reports UNB.

The injured Moinul Islam is a final year student of mass communication and journalism department of the university and also a member of the university theatre troop, Anushilon Natyadal.

Witnesses said Moinul along with his two friends were sitting at a tea stall in front of the university's Mumtazuddin Arts Building on Tuesday around 8pm. BCL RU unit information and research affairs secretary Mahmudur Rahman Kanon and RU Arts Faculty unit joint-secretary Jhalak Sarkar told Moinul and his friends to leave the place immediately, causing an altercation between them. At one stage, Kanon punched the right eye of Moinul, felling him to the ground, and later Jhalak and his co-activists also took part in the beating, eyewitnesses said.

Later, Moinul's friends rushed him to the RU Medical Centre where doctors referred him to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. Quoting doctor, Sujon Nazeer, one of the activists of the theatre troop said Moinul had gotten injuries in his right eye and his head.   Contacted, both Kanon and Jhalak denied the allegation of beating. They said that there had been a misunderstanding between them and it had been resolved.

BCL RU unit general secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu said that he heard about the incident adding that he would take steps after talking with the accused leaders.

RU proctor Professor Lutfor Rahman said that they would take necessary step after talking with both groups.

Mentionable, Kanon was expelled on July 11 for beating up an on-duty journalist on campus while the journalist was taking the photos of BCLvandalising on a bus in front of the main gate of the university, and later his expulsion order was withdrawn on November 17 last year.
