Youth beaten up for alleged rape attempt

Rajshahi: A young man was injured in mob beating on allegation of attempting to rape a 10-year-old schoolgirl at Roypara in the city on Tuesday afternoon.

Jahidul alias Sukbal, 25, a resident of Guripara in the city, attempted to rape the fifth grader at her house.

Hearing her scream, local people rushed in and caught Jahidul, said Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kashiadanga Police Station.

30 acres forest land recovered

Sylhet: Members of taskforce committee on Tuesday recovered a total of 30 acres of land of Forest Department from the possession of encroachers at Jaflong in Goainghat.

RSM Monirul Islam, a forest official of Sylhet, said encroachers had occupied 30 acres of land for long.

A taskforce team, led by Executive Magistrate Sumon Chandra Das, conducted a drive at Guchchagram and Rahmatpur villages in the upazila and evicted several makeshift houses and 17 stone crushers from the areas, he said.

The eviction drive will continue to recover the land of Forest Department from encroachers, he vowed.

Free treatment at CMH

The Bangladesh Army and a charity of the Qatar Red Crescent team have jointly provided free treatment without operation and setting up of pacemaker to poor heart patients both from the military and the civilians and those with complicated heart troubles since birth at the Dhaka CMH between Feb 21-25.

According to an ISPR release yesterday the patients numbered 64(9) from the military and rest from the civilians. The treatment also included setting up of different devices like ASD and PDA.

The DGMS Major General SM Motahar Hossain and Commandant CMH, Dhaka Brigadier General Mahbubur Rahman were in the overall care and administrative cooperation.

Zonta Club team meets Speaker

Delegation of Zonta Club International yesterday called on Speaker of the Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her office in the parliament yesterday.

The delegation gave honorary membership of the club to the Speaker, said a press release.

The delegation was led by Nilufar Zafar Ullah, MP. Other members of the delegation include - president of Zonta Club -3 Rehena Ashraf, Zonta District

Governor Fahmida Karim, Dr Rubina Hossain, Rubina Kader and Nazma Shafik.

During the meeting, they discussed about issues relating to women empowerment, gender equality, health, education, sanitation and prevention of early marriage.
